Thoughts on the latest developments in IoT

But wait...

June 2021 : Elon Musk's starlink has recently launched a constellation of low earth micro satellites, promising internet coverage at reasonable speeds (and in theory prices) to people who have historically had few options. Satellite has the potential to provide IoT Services where traditional and IoT focussed networks, have historically struggled. But is this an IoT play or simply a vehicle for Musk's other services. Australian Startup Fleet Space certainly thinks there is an enourmous opportunity for Satellite IoT by combining a satellite base station with LoraWAN

September 2020 : The Australian Federal Government has released its much anticipated Voluntary Code of Practive for IoT. The development of the draft was driven largely by the increasing focus of cyber criminals on IoT devices and lobbying by Australian Cyber Security Industry. A first of it's kind document it starts the process but is a long way from mandating a solution to Cyber security in IoT.

February 2020 : Are your light bulbs safe from hacking? Many IoT devices providers have little or no understanding of the technologies in their devices, often utilising third party libraries like Zigbee to provide internet connectivity for their IoT device. Phillip's Hue light bulbs sufferred this very challenge in 2020. Since resolved with a firmware patch - the big challenge for companies like Phillips is that they are often not equipped with the resources to roll out a patch to millions of light bulbs in milliions of consumer premises.
